KT Blasting Specialists is owned by Ken Tully. Mr. Tully holds a B.Sc. majoring in Geology and has been working in the blasting industry for over 30 years. His career began in Nova Scotia, Canada, where he owned a blast design and vibration monitoring & consulting company. He founded and was president of the first Canadian Chapter of the International Society of explosives Engineers, has presented seminars on blast vibrations & air concussion for the Technical University of Nova Scotia, consulted on the drafting of the new SC blaster’s exam, consulted on the drafting of Municipal blasting by-laws in NS, has presented to the Civil Engineers Society of Charleston SC on the advantages and applications of explosives for demolition projects, and has been featured in a documentary by the Discovery Channel and in the Journal of Explosives Engineers. He currently holds blaster licenses in 15 states and BC Canada.
Over the past 30 years Mr. Tully has held positions with a small number of Drilling and Blasting firms. He was Manager of the Atlantic Canada Region for TMG Rock Contractors, where he was also the Blaster in Charge of many close proximity blasting projects, before moving to the United States to be the General Superintendent for Advanced Blasting Technologies where he was also the Blaster in Charge on many high exposure blasting projects. In 2005 Mr. Tully made the transition to demolition blasting when he was hired by Advanced Blasting Services as the blasting specialist for the Cooper River Bridge demolition project in Charleston, SC. Over the past 12 years Mr. Tully has been directly responsible for designing and implementing blasts for the successful demolition of over 250 marine bridge substructures in areas where the protection of new structures, the environment and marine life was critical. He has also conducted the blasting of numerous smoke stacks, industrial structures and buildings.
Mr. Tully’s experience includes the development and drafting of Blast Plans and shot designs for projects requiring explosives use, management of drilling and blasting operations for demolition projects and rock excavation projects, planning project timelines and schedules, supervising and working hands-on in the loading of shots, compiling blast reports, procuring permits, pre-blast and post-blast inspections, seismograph operation, vibration prediction and analysis, water overpressure predictions, determination of Marine Mammal exclusion zones (including PTS and TTS zones) for underwater blasts. Projects have required extensive underwater drilling and blasting, controlled blasting of large concrete columns, piers and footings in close proximity to new bridges and structures, explosives demolition of smoke stacks, steel superstructures, industrial & commercial buildings, rock trenching and mass rock excavation (both in remote areas and in close proximity to existing structures), shafts and tunnels. He is experienced in the operation of numerous types of rock drills including percussion, hydraulic, air track, and coring rigs, the application of conventional explosives, shaped charges, electric detonators, non-electric detonators, electronic detonators, conventional blasting machines and remote controlled blasting machines.
